What Is A Diesel Engine?
A diesel engine, named after Rudolf Diesel, is an internal combustion engine where fuel ignition is caused by the high temperature of air compressed within the cylinder, making it a compression-ignition (CI) engine. Unlike gasoline engines, which use spark plugs for ignition, diesel engines rely on mechanical compression and glow plugs to heat the air-fuel mixture. Diesel engines are powerful and fuel-efficient and ideal for heavy-duty applications in construction, mining, and agriculture.
How Does A Diesel Engine Work?
A diesel engine works through a four-step process: induction, compression, ignition, and exhaust.
1.Induction: Air is drawn into the cylinder through the intake valve as the piston moves down, filling the cylinder with fresh air.
2.Compression: The intake valve closes, and the piston moves back up, compressing the air to a high pressure and temperature.
3.Ignition: Diesel fuel is injected into the hot, compressed air, causing it to ignite spontaneously. This combustion pushes the piston down, generating power.
4.Exhaust: The exhaust valve opens, and the piston moves up again, expelling the burnt gases from the cylinder, preparing for the next cycle.
5 Common Types Of Diesel Engine
Diesel engines can be classified in several ways, with the most common methods being by size (output) and by the number of strokes used to complete an engine cycle.
By Size (Output)
Small Diesel Engines:
These engines produce up to 288 horsepower and are often direct injection, in-line, four- or six-cylinder configurations. They are typically found in smaller trucks and automobiles due to their compact size and sufficient power. Small diesel engines are the most commonly produced type.
Medium Diesel Engines:
Medium diesel engines can generate up to 1,000 horsepower. Medium diesel engines is commonly used in heavy-duty trucks. Medium diesel engines offer a balance between power and size, making them suitable for more demanding applications than small diesel engines.
Large Diesel Engines:
Large diesel engines produce more than 1,000 horsepower and are used in applications requiring significant power, such as trains, ships, and large industrial equipment. Large diesel engines are designed for maximum power and durability to handle heavy loads.
By Number of Strokes
2-Stroke Diesel Engines:
A 2-stroke engine completes its engine cycle in two strokes. The process starts with air entering the cylinder, displacing old air, followed by compression. Diesel fuel is then injected as the piston nears the top, creating chemical energy that pushes the piston down and converts it to mechanical energy. Although 2-stroke engines are lighter and smaller, they are more prone to wear and tear, making them less common.
4-Stroke Diesel Engines:
In a 4-stroke engine, the piston completes four strokes per cycle: intake, compression, power, and exhaust. Air is drawn into the cylinder during the intake stroke, compressed as the piston moves up, ignited by injected fuel at the top of the compression stroke, and then the resulting explosion pushes the piston down (power stroke). Finally, the exhaust stroke expels burnt gases. 4-stroke diesel engines is the most common, widely used in diesel trucks and automobiles.
Is A Diesel Engine Better Than Petrol?
Whether a diesel engine is better than a petrol engine depends on specific needs and usage. Diesel engines are more fuel-efficient, durable and ideal for long-distance driving and heavy-duty applications. However, they are more expensive than pertol, and tend to be noisier. Petrol engines are cheaper, quieter, and perform better in cold weather, but they have shorter lifespans and lower fuel efficiency.
