How To Check Fuel Pump Injection Timing

Locating Timing Marks

In order to find the timing marks on the pump housing or crankshaft pulley, you should first turn off the engine and then disconnect the battery. Always refer to your manufacturer’s manual for their exact positions— these are usually clearly indicated but can vary among vehicle models and makes.

Locating the TDC (Top Dead Center)

Cylinder number one is identified, and the glow plug is removed; after that, manually turn the crankshaft until the highest pressure point is felt, which indicates TDC. Align the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley with those on the timing cover.

Using Timing Light

Connect the timing light to the first cylinder’s glow plug and start the engine — let it idle. Check for the timing marks and their alignment by pointing the timing light at them. If needed, make adjustments to the injection pump timing by loosening the bolts and turning the pump.

Testing Injection Pump Timing

Alignment of the timing marks is to be scrutinized carefully after modifications. Drive the vehicle for a trial, paying attention to the engine’s behavior, sounds, exhaust fumes and temperature. Establish that there is an enhancement in performance and proper timing operation.
